Freshly Pressed…Shameless Vulgarity and Ingratitude

canstockphoto8758527Just a word of thanks to WordPress and readers/visitors for the recent Freshly Pressed attention for 50 Shades of Blue: The Use of Profanity at The Green Study. I think it bodes well for my writing career that my highlighted posts involve internal name calling, getting a tattoo and now this classic – a piece I ended with the sentence “I hear the writer is a complete asshole.” My family, if any of them knew how to use the internet thingy, would be so proud.

This has been an enjoyable experience and I am thankful for the new readers and commenters I’ve “met”. However, because I am a writer and feel uncomfortable with any vestige of self-esteem or self-confidence, I Googled “Freshly Pressed” to see what other bloggers thought about the experience. I’m going against etiquette and turning my thank you into a rant.

It is apparently de rigueur among a few bloggers, to talk about how shitty all the blog posts are that get tapped by WordPress for some attention. One writer said 98% of the posts don’t belong there. That’s rather precise. Maybe she knows something we don’t. Maybe she’s like an Olympic judge and knows about the drugs used to pump up writers’ performances. Maybe my blood test came back showing all the caffeine and Cherry Garcia I use to prop myself up during draft writing sessions.

Another said gleefully that he hoped it would never happen to his blog, because it would be an insult. I am going to disabuse him of that notion and say it actually feels the opposite of an insult. I feel less indignant for myself than I do for all the other posts that get selected, many of which I not only enjoyed reading, but found other blogs to read through the comment sections.

This is the thing about blogging – it’s not separate from who you are as a person. If you like to tear other people down, because you think your high art is more important or significant than that of someone else, I’m guessing you’re kind of a dick in person. If you think other blogs getting attention is a detriment to your blog, your focus is on the wrong prize.

Maybe I’m a mediocre, pedestrian writer. Maybe my viewpoints aren’t radical or extreme or highbrow enough to deserve notice. Maybe I’m pop music – vulgar, bland and auto-tuned. I don’t give a shit. Getting Pressed is fun and I wish it for every single one of you. Especially for the guy who would be insulted. That would just be funny.

In the spirit of being ungracious and because I had to drive the entire way yesterday morning to my daughter’s school (with said daughter) behind a truck that had “Ditch the Bitch: Let’s Go Hunting” on its bumper, I decided to toss rote gratitude out the window and post this little bit of bile.

While Freshly Pressed is a nice pat on the back, it is not the end all, be all. It is a little excitement, some work and some really enjoyable exchanges with people I’ve not run across before. After it’s over, it’s back to writing, because that’s my secret to being a happy blogger – most pleasure comes from the writing. The feedback is just an extra teaspoon of sugar in my already comforting cup of tea.

It goes without saying that blogging is a personal journey and what a person finds appealing will always be subjective. One blogger’s measure of success is not going to be the same as another’s. Intentions will not be the same, writing style will not be the same, subjects of interest will not be the same. Yet diligence and authenticity and passion will always be of interest to someone. And this is where my little diatribe turns the corner…

I “met” a lot of new bloggers in this last go round and I’m writing this mostly for their benefit. My intent for blogging has been to get in the practice of writing publicly, so if your intent is therapy or making money or starting an anarchist rebellion, the thoughts below may not be for you. Here are the lessons I’ve learned about blogging, mostly from my mistakes:

  • Define your purpose for blogging. Write it down somewhere – you’ll need the reminder when your stats stagnate or shoot up.  Why are you doing this?
  • Remember that no one really gives a shit if you don’t write a post for awhile. Post work that pleases you, when it pleases you. Schedules are often the breeding ground of dreck and filler.
  • If you don’t have the time or desire to respond to comments, turn off that capability on your blog post. No one wants to hear the echo of an empty room. Blogging, when those features are enabled, is interactive.  I remember one reader told me she had a friend who got mad every time someone commented on his blog. Apparently he likes living enraged.
  • Don’t get discouraged by the lack of traffic if you desire a growing readership (and return to that first point). It takes time and a willingness to read and comment on other blogs. It takes time to find writers you like to read who might make a connection with what you write.
  • If you don’t enjoy it, don’t do it. It’s supposed to be fun.
  • And please, don’t read blogging advice articles…

I don’t think of this as being deserving, because honestly, life seems like a real crap shoot, but I like to believe I’m smart enough to appreciate good things when they happen. It’s good to hear from you – I hope all is going well. I’m spending the weekend getting caught up on online reading – my eyes are doing much better, so I hope to read your posts as well.

  2. A) I only check FP sporadically because, honestly, I have enough to read with the blogs I follow. But I have read and “met” some gems there. Like anything, I scan, I pick, I choose. FP is a smorgasbord at a pretty good restaurant.
    B) Being FPed is awesome.

    • I’m the same kind of FP reader because of time constraints, but smorgasbord is a very good way to describe that page. There are so many blogs out there and sometimes this is a way to find a few more of interest and inspiration. I do enjoy a good FP meal and yes, people are beyond weird. Thank goodness – where else would we get material?

        • I like doing that as well – in fact, I had blogs listed in my FP post and some of them were surprised about the uptick in traffic. I’ve also got another contest coming up that will give some blogs exposure as well.
          I’ll check out the first link, but I’m already a huge fan of Bill at pinklightsabre. His preciseness in characterization is amazing!

  3. Well said, Michelle. Folks need to say thank you and not analyze why or why not. I’ve been lucky enough to be FP’d. I don’t often go to that page to find new blogging buddies, but sometimes I do. Some pieces are great, some aren’t (dang it, though, I forgot to get a percentage!). They are chosen to showcase folks, to give a pat on the back. And to show the variety of things that can be found on WP.

    • Thanks, Elyse. Like Ross pointed out, FP is a smorgasbord, a cross-section of what’s out there and it isn’t intended to be anything else, I think. And the results of the experience are often fleeting. Interaction and time seem to be the biggest factors in developing a readership.

  4. As a new blogger I have appreciated FP as a way to gain an appreciation for the vast variety of blog writing, and for what gets noticed. I would definitely not consider it an insult to be featured there (and my mother would probably print the darn thing and paste it in a scrapbook…) I also appreciate your advice (even if I`m not supposed to :)!

    • I’ll be at the 2 year mark at the end of the year and I still find the Freshly Pressed page a great way to find new material, meet new bloggers, etc. I would never suggest it’s the best of the best or some ridiculous subjective moniker, but I think the editors do what they can to find a variety of posts that give a representative snapshot of WordPress “blogland”. Before I was put on that page, I was always envious, but my envy usually takes the form of “work harder” and doesn’t mean I want to detract from the experience of someone else by denigrating the whole process.

  6. Wonderful advice – it’s okay to offer up some wisdom. Some of us are humble enough to take it. It astonishes me that a few commenters on your FP post would be that hostile. What’s the point of that? All they did was help all the other commenters mark them as cranks. FP’d is a fine thing to be. It always comes as a surprise to me when it happens. And the point is, and here’s more advice, don’t write with the goal of being FP’d. Just do it. I’m grateful for every single person who follows me. I hope they know that.

    • I should clarify that I sought out blogger posts about Freshly Pressed. The commenters on my post were/are lovely. Apparently I can’t experience any moment of success without seeking out some denigration of that success!
      While still immensely grateful for the WordPress nod, I’ve gotten a little jaded. I know that it’s temporary and that I’ll be back to doing the work with maybe a little more pressure. Once the traffic fades, I settle down and focus. If a blogger is doing it right, the FP nod seems to come out of the blue.
      I follow because I appreciate your take on life and your appreciation comes in the form of responsiveness and interaction. Really, that’s all one needs to do in order to engage readers and make this a happy venture. Be yourself, be respectful, enjoy the experience.

    • I love your travel blog, although I haven’t been able to consistently read them (eyeballs) or I’ve been a lurker. The lovely thing about your posts is that they provide an immediate sensory experience and even reading the archives puts you there. And the pictures are fabulous. I also love the perspectives from both you and Don. I think it’s a trap to compare yourself to other blogs. I can only imagine the sheer numbers of blog posts that get published each day and that must be sorted through. Your day will come – I know it.

I very much enjoyed reading this post. And it reminded me to remember why I blog, and to do it from that place.         • It’s true for most things in life, isn’t it? Do it for the sake of doing it, be present and open…all tough practices at times.
          Believe me, I’ve had to walk myself back from the crazy-making edge of stats and comparison to other blogs, which is why I frequently have to remind myself where the real pleasure lies.
          The eyes are very gradually improving and this has lifted my spirits and sleep quality immeasurably!

  9. “Define your purpose for blogging” is the tip I’d most recommend people take away from this post…because purposeful writing is what keeps people reading, whether it’s a blog post, essay, or novel. What’s the point? If you don’t know, your readers won’t stick around long enough to find out.

    Being Freshly Pressed on the same day as you, I’d like to think I’m in a good enough position to agree with everything in this post! 😀 It’s a crazy fun wild mixer, designed to facilitate meeting other bloggers. I’ve met some wonderful people this week and gotten encouragement to keep at it. (Not to mention tons and tons and tons of blogs I still have to check out…how many hours are there in a day? Wasn’t there this novel I was trying to finish?)

    I’m very happy to have found you and this blog because you say the things I want to say but never seem to get away with.

    • I like the phrase “purposeful writing”. It sets blog writing apart from other forms of social media, which I think people often confuse. I like the characterization of FP as being a wild mixer. Especially since I was in my pajamas for a good part of it. You make a point that was very true for me. After my first post ever, I got one “Like”. It was enough for me to do the next post. It’s a self-perpetuating system of encouragement, especially for someone like me, who is a relatively new writer.

Those folks that look down on Freshly Pressed sound like they don’t know the difference between The Man Booker Prize and “Hey, ya’all might like these posts!” I love FP because it encourages me to read and discover blogs that I might miss otherwise. That’s how I found your blog, which I enjoy by the way, so keep following your own blogging advice. Except that you shouldn’t follow blogging advice–

    • Good point. None of us are likely in the running for a Pulitzer. Except maybe me. Retaining delusions of grandeur is one of the side effects of being Pressed. It’ll wear off in the next excruciating writing session.
      It’s really a numbers game – there are SO many blogs out there, that some would likely never find eyeballs. It seems like if you keep at, as Jordan mentioned, purposeful writing, eventually you’ll gain readership or the FP nod or meaningful interaction. It’s the waiting for it that will ruin one’s blogging experience, because sometimes it takes a while.

  11. “Remember that no one really gives a shit if you don’t write a post for awhile.” Ah – thank you for the permission to be kind to myself! I get this little internal alarm: it’s been a week! The stats are slipping! “My public” is wondering where I am… Not so much.
    Being FP was incredibly exciting for me and I met lots of people through the process, some of whom I’ve started following and some who follow me. It does “introduce” you to a lot of folks. As you say, once the hub-bub dies down, you are just a regular writer again, left with all the spam followers who found you through FP; so that’s a down-side.
    I always get myself to read a FP or two about something I’m “not interested in” or know nothing about. Most of the time, I learn something or find a new interest or at least some good pictures of southern Adjikaghantstanislaw. I met you when you got FP last year, I think, and have found lots of others through your blog and commenters.
    So screw those grumpy people. Thanks again for sending people my way to be offended, and congrats again!

    • That’s one piece of advice that used to drive me crazy – writing on schedule. I simply can’t operate like that – either in terms of personal scheduling or creative timing. I do usually let readers know when I’ll be dropping out of sight for more than a week or two, but the reality is, we’re all SO busy and there is so much material to read, that if you start a post with: “Sorry I haven’t posted in awhile”, most readers think “oh, I hadn’t noticed”.
      You read much the way I do – I read things outside my interests and contrary to my beliefs. I think it’s critically important, especially in this day and age when you can pick media or books or bloggers that only support what you think. There’s no growth, no intellectual challenge, just me and my stagnant old opinions. And I also appreciate learning about parts of the world I’m unlikely to ever see in my lifetime – arm chair traveling.

    • I tried writing on schedule, every other day and boy, did I write (and publish) some garbage. The problem, too, when you do that, is that someone will comment or “Like” and you soothe yourself into thinking it wasn’t garbage. Not exactly an incubator for good work!

      • I hear ya. I see people post daily and it’s just.not.good. IMO very often. I post once a week or once every 2 weeks but I trytrytry to make them all really quality pieces. I’m happy with my cadence, but I know others post so much more—so sometimes I question myself! I got FP’d about a month into blogging and LOVVVVVED it … every minute of it … so I was happy to see you ENJOY it 🙂

        • I have actually unsubscribed to blogs that post too frequently, since they were overwhelming my reader and usually not with posts that I felt were particularly enriching (posting memes every hour) or that after one or two original posts, would just reblog other people’s work every day. I like the use of the word “cadence” in this context. That must have been a heady experience, getting FP’d so soon after starting. I had been blogging in a vacuum for 8 months and found the initial experience overwhelming. It took several weeks for me to regain my sense of purpose.

    • Thanks for the congrats! (Way #265) I do try to respond to each and every comment, but tend to respond in kind. If someone has taken the time to write something thoughtful, I want to give that back. But if it’s just a nod, that’s how I respond as well. It seems a little tit for tat, but the only way to be responsive effectively, especially on an FP post.

      • When I got fp’d I was at the point of considering “thank you” in different languages because I’d run out of ways to say it.
        Afterwards, my community settled back to more or less its original shape.
        And in a definite show of ingratitude, overall I didn’t think much of the whole experience.

  17. I’ve enjoyed your blog for a long time, Michelle, & as you said, being FP’d is fun, like that dollop of whipped cream on top of your ice cream… you don’t really NEED it, but it’s an added layer of pleasure.

    I blog mostly for myself, & it’s been sporadic, at best, lately, simply because mundane life has gotten in the way.
    But for me, it’s about sharing. Sharing the funny, the thoughtful, & the difficult. And for the most part, I’ve had a really good response- *shrug* but I’d write anyway, even if no one responded. It’s just something I do.

    Congrats on the official kudos, & I’ll keep reading as long as you’re writing! 🙂

    • Thanks for your kind words and congrats. I waffle a lot on my reasons for blogging, but it generally boils down to writing and letting other people see it. It’s the proverbial toes in the water, before diving in and really taking some chances trying to get published. It is a positive environment for the most part, so I’m sure I’m in for a shock when I start submitting work, but I had to start somewhere. I’m very lucky to have such generous readers – you are greatly appreciated!

    • Thank you! It has to be fun – most of the time writers and bloggers (especially at the beginning) are on their own. If we’re happy doing it solo, everything else is just frosting…or chocolate…or wine (all of the above).

I don’t get the anti-FP killjoys at all, but if they disagree with the WordPress editors on what constitutes a commendable post, maybe they can start their own “Blog of the Day” blog and show us what kind of writing they would celebrate if they were in charge.

    Full disclosure: I just had a post get FP’ed on Saturday afternoon, so I’m clearly biased here. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go enjoy the stats bump as much as possible while being thankful that WordPress’ uneducated, low-standard staff thought so well of our execrable pabulum. *eyeroll*

  21. Hi Michelle, new follower here… I actually found you via your SPAM followers post. I was FP’d last month and I made sure to love every second of the experience knowing from friends’ experiences that it would be a temporary rush and that life would return to normal shortly. I wasn’t expecting the rush of SPAM follows in the aftermath though; I guess that’s been the biggest downside, because the numbers just seem tainted. The silver-lining though is that it has reminded me that I write for myself, not for the numbers.

    Love your suggestions, especially “No one wants to hear the echo of an empty room.” This is so true. And I agree that building an interactive blogging community is time-consuming–you simply must put in the time of visiting other blogs and commenting, and replying to comments on your own blog.

    • Hi Christy – thanks for reading and following. I think that is one of the better lessons of Freshly Pressed: you have to remember why you blog in order to deal with the drop in traffic and weirdness. This was my 3rd round with FP and it was much easier to deal with than the first time, when I felt like I was coming down off a high. I was depressed and had a hard time getting myself going again. Now I know that my reasons for blogging always boil down to the writing and the work. The interaction is just a bonus.

    • Thanks, John. Whenever I forget my sense of purpose, I ask myself if I’d still write even if no one ever saw my work. The answer is inevitably “yes”. It really helps to keep me focused.

  24. There are a lot of great writers out there who don’t get recognition from FP, it’s true and FP is inherently biased against creative writers and poets. BUT, that’s not what gets the backlash, I think – it is the overweening, self congratulatory “I’ve been Freshly Pressed” Posts which pop up after the honor is conveyed, in which the poster proceeds to act like they are suddenly something special, seemingly ignorant of the tens of thousands of just as good and often better writers who are – the complete abandonment of humility and purpose and the revelling in “celebrity” for that moment. And then the sad and hilarious wandering off of the temporary new readers and the inevitable posts bitching about that. That’s why there’s a perceived posted-on-FP-backlash, I think 🙂

    • I have no illusions about the relevance or significance of the Freshly Pressed page. It does nothing to further me as a writer and it’s a lot of work to be responsive to visitors. But it’s also fun and as long as people (on either side of the coin) don’t take it or themselves too seriously, it can stay that way. Anything else is just a distraction. Now, I must get back to writing my new post about how Freshly Pressed fulfills me as a human and how the minions must bow down. Or not…

  25. Gosh, who knew? It’s like nobody’s allowed to have some fun and be proud of an accomplishment. I felt really honored and kind of embarrassed when I was Fresh Pressed. I’ve certainly read some that were Pressed that left me scratching my head about the decision but that usually involved glaring proofreading errors. That percentage was much closer to 1% than 98%.

    • Honored and kind of embarrassed – that neatly sums it up. I just figure that some posts were not my taste. I’ve read that there have been a lot proofreading errors, but I must have missed those posts. I think when people complain about other people’s work being undeserving of praise, it really puts them in a bad light, not the subject of their scorn. Most selection processes, from the Oscars to creepy pageants, are subjective and I think it’s pretty pointless to denigrate the choices. There’s no money involved, no publishing contracts, nothing really at stake here – it’s not like it can be used on a resume, so why get bent out of shape about it?

  27. Great post – I think being FP’d is a nice pat on the back, like you said. I think the best benefit is the increase in interaction. Posting work you like is great advice – if you don’t like it, why bother. Congrats!

  29. I enjoyed your take on being Freshly Pressed. I blogged for many years without being Freshly Pressed, so I formed a Club – The Never Been Freshly Pressed Club. It was a lot of fun, and of course, shortly after that I was Freshly Pressed. I had to resign from my club and pass the reigns over to another blogger.
    My Freshly Pressed post was put in the WordPress category of Natural Disasters, which doesn’t bring in a lot of readers, and a few of those who did read were very unsupportive of people who have a cabin (which was lost in the disaster) and a house too. All in all, being Freshly Pressed was a Natural Disaster for me!

    • Ha! It’s always the people that get a tad grumpy about Freshly Pressed that get tagged for it. I’ve seen that happen numerous times. Perhaps that’s part of an algorithm for getting chosen! I’ve gotten a spike in traffic, a lot of comments to respond to and then everything returns to normal. Initially, I thought it would raise readership, but when I look at blogs that have never been pressed with a large following, the common denominator is time (how long the blog has been around) and social media use (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
      I have been fortunate that my posts were so apparently middle-of-the-road and uncontroversial that I didn’t have to deal with much in the way of jerk comments. Sorry you had that experience!
