As I got ready to participate in my favorite tradition of the season – the delivering of treat bags to my daughter’s school, I had a brainstorm of an idea. My spirits have been a bit low, between the events of the last week and our recovery from the family flu. So I’m going to sponsor a contest with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Welcome to the first, and possibly last, Holiday Humor Contest at The Green Study.
Guidelines:
Write a previously unpublished blog post (with title) 200-500 words long about the funniest Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice or New Year’s you’ve ever experienced. Submit it through my Contact page by Tuesday, December 25th, 12:00am (US Central Standard Time). Update 12/25/12: I’m extending the deadline until December 27th, 2012 (12:00pm US Central Standard Time).
One entry per person please. The contest begins as soon as this post goes public.
The winners will be notified on December 28th before 12:00pm (US Central Standard Time).
Guest blog posting, shipping of the prize and donations will take place the first week of January.
All entries will be judged by me, myself and I. It’s entirely subjective.
1st Prize: Your entry will be posted as a guest post to my blog, you will be sent one Harry and David organic fruit basket and I will make a $100 donation to the American Red Cross on your behalf to your local Red Cross Chapter or their International Disaster Response fund. If you do not have a US residential address, the basket is off the table, but the donation will still be made in your name.
2nd Prize: Your entry will be posted as a guest post to my blog and I will make a $50 donation to the Red Cross on your behalf to your local Red Cross Chapter or their International Disaster Response fund.
3rd Prize: Your entry will be posted as a guest post to my blog and you will receive a postcard from Minneapolis, which will be a collectors’ item in a century or five.
Let’s have some holiday fun – and we’re off!
Update 01/02/13: List of winners and links to winning entries.
Not sure I have a hilarious story. Will wrack my brain. Regardless this is a great idea and I hope you get to make lots of donations. And I look forward to reading them. Have a wonderful Christmas!

Poop… I have an awesome story, but I posted it on my blog years ago. But since you need the laughs, go ahead and read and giggle away: http://sappychick.com/2005/07/09/writing-prompt-it-was-his-idea-of-a-good-time/

That story was indeed giggle/cringe-worthy! Thanks for sharing it!

What a nice idea… And great idea for the prizes! I will have to think about this. The adult Christmas memories that come to mind first involve family confessions, feuds, alcohol & crying in laundry rooms and powder rooms. And that’s all before dinner has been served. Lol! 🙂

We had a few holidays where law enforcement officers were involved when I was growing up. But it wasn’t funny haha. My adult holidays have been pretty tame since, thank goodness. I had some HI-larious stories during my drunken 20s, which I barely remember. So glad Facebook wasn’t around then!

It looks like all my paragraphs disappeared. I wrote it a little differently than it looks on your contact page.

I think the Contact page mutates it, but it arrived in my email with all paragraphs in place.

Great! With any luck, I’ll be adding to my postcard collection!

Thanks for sponsoring this contest. At this point, I need to write more than I need to drink spiked eggnog and eat cookies.

Sure – I wondered if everyone would be so crazy busy (and/or drunk on eggnog) that I wouldn’t get much response, but that seems not to be the case. Yay!

Hi there, Green. I just entered. Since I just met you, and since I just wrote up a story I’d meant to post on my blog this year but didn’t manage to, I hope you like it.
I do love contests! Thanks for hosting this one!

Great! Mine may be a little long — I wrote it rather quickly.

Not to worry – I was just trying to make the task seem less daunting by establishing a word count.
